Phenolphthalein White CAS: 77-09-8 | MF: C20H14O4 | MW: 318.32, Buy now for reliable and Reproducible results from Tristains indicators at Chemical World.

Phenolphthalein Indicator White (CAS No. 77-09-8) is a crystalline organic compound that is a phthalein, a white crystalline substance. It is commonly known that it is used to measure acid-base pH. Phenolphthalein is colorless in acidic conditions and changes from colorless to pink and then deep red in alkaline and cyanide carbonate solutions. It is colorless at a pH less than 8.5 and turns pink to deep red at a pH greater than 9.0. The molecular formula of this compound is C20H14O4, and it does not dissolve easily in water but does dissolve easily in organic solvents. Because of these characteristics, Phenolphthalein Indicator White has many applications in the fields of analytical chemistry, education, and industrial laboratories.

Applications

  • Acid“Base Titrations: Usually applied to determine endpoints of titration in analytic chemistry procedures.
  • Educational Demonstrations: It is ideal for teaching in an academic laboratory because it exhibits a clear and observable color shift when changing pH and when titration experiments are performed.
  • Institutes of Quality Control: Used in industrial and pharmaceutical quality control testing where sensitivity and reliability are needed.
  • Research Chemistry: Applied in analytical experiments involving alkaline reactions and compound behavior analysis.

Key features

  • Highly Visible Transitions: Gives obviously definite color modification with pH changes.
  • User-Friendly pH Detection: Sensibly detects pH variations in the pH region of 8.5 to 10.
  • Versatile Usage: Applicable to both aqueous and non-aqueous systems.
  • Stable and Low Maintenance: Stays stable chemically in typical laboratory storage conditions.
  • Cost-Effective Performance: Provides professional-quality accuracy at a low price in the lab.

General Description

Phenolphthalein is a chemical that is commonly used as a colorimetric pH indicator. The compound has been observed to turn orange at pH <0, clear between pH 0-8.2, fuchsia between pH 8.2-12, and clear again at a pH above 12. It has been postulated that the mutagenic effects of Phenolphthalein at high doses can be attributed the enhancement intracellular free oxygen radicals. The compound has also been observed to induce mitotic abnormalities and micronuclei with kinetochores in vitro. In Syrian hamster embryos treated with 10-40 ?M of Phenolpthalein a significant number of chromosomal aberrations occurred at the hprt locus. On human breast cancer cells Phenolphthalein has been observed to have weak estrogenic effects.
