Solvent Red 27 stains lipids and is commonly used to analyze muscle fibers. Studies have combined using muscle cross sections with immunofluorescence microscopy to visualize and identify muscle fiber type specific intramyocellular lipids (IMCL) using Solvent Red 27. Sertoli cell research reports using Solvent Red 27 staining to study the association between lipid droplet formation and the phagocytosis of apoptotic spermatogenic cells in vitro. Solvent Red 27 does not stain unesterified cholesterol and can also be used to stain alveolar macrophages.
