Oil Red O stains lipids and is commonly used to analyze muscle fibers. Studies have combined using muscle cross sections with immunofluorescence microscopy to visualize and identify muscle fiber type specific intramyocellular lipids (IMCL) using Oil Red O. Sertoli cell research reports using Oil Red O staining to study the association between lipid droplet formation and the phagocytosis of apoptotic spermatogenic cells in vitro. Oil Red O does not stain unesterified cholesterol and can also be used to stain alveolar macrophages.
