Metanil Yellow

Metanil Yellow CAS: 587-98-4 | MF: C18H14N3O3SNa | MW: 375.38, Buy Histological Stains & Dyes for Histology, Cytology, Microbiology, Hematology & Biology Lab from TriStains at Chemical World.

Metanil Yellow is a bright yellow to orange-yellow crystalline powder that is usually used as a laboratory dye. It is also called Acid Yellow 36 and 3- (4-Anilinophenylazo) benzenesulfonic acid sodium salt. The molecular formula of this synthetic azo dye is C18H14N3NaO3S and has the typical azo (-N=N-)linkage characteristic of azo dyes. It is made up of aromatic rings, a sulfonate group and azo group, which are attributable to its staining and indicator properties. The dye is water-soluble and insoluble in an alcohol, most organic solvents. In analytical chemistry, Metanil Yellow is used as a pH indicator, and it changes between red and yellow in the pH range 1.2 to 3.2, so it is practical in acidic pH analysis.

Applications

  • Applied to the staining of leukocyte granules of hematology and microscopic interpretation.
  • Used as a counterstain in tissue sections, such as both PAS and iron-hematoxylin staining methods.

Key features

  • Yellow-Orange Visible Shade: Increases the contrast of stained biological images.
  • Stable and Reproducible: Provides uniform staining results during laboratory procedures.
  • Multi-Purpose Use: Available to histological staining, cytology, microbiology and pH indicator research.
  • Economical Laboratory Dye: Gives quality performance at a reasonable price.

Metanil yellow is an acid dye. Studies using cross-linked chitosan beads suggest that Metanil yellow has an adsorption capacity of 3.56 mmol g1at pH 4 and 30 C. Alternate studies indicate that photocatalytic degradation of Metanil yellow can be carried out using TiO2as a photocatalyst under UV irradiation. In addition, ion chromatography of Metanil yellow displayed complete mineralization into CO2, N2, H2O and inorganic ions such as NH4+, NO3and SO42-. Furthermore, Metanil yellow is useful in spectrophotometric methods to determine the presence of trace amounts of nitrates and nitrites in solution. The method utilizes the fact that potassium bromate can catalyze the discoloring of Metanil yellow which can then be analyzed by spectrophotometry.
